Chezzik's 1-375 Tailoring guide

This was first published as Chezzik's 1-250 Fast Track Tailoring
guide, and was designed to show how to get to 250 as fast as
possible, for the purpose of transmuting mooncloth. It was then
expanded to 300, and eventually to 375.

Purpose:
In world of warcraft, making decent money at a low level is impossible,
unless you are good at playing the market. This can be difficult,
because of the large listing fees from the AH.

If a player's goal is to be wealthy early, the best plan is to start
with two gathering professions. Gathering professions will probably
continue to be the most profitable, as long as that particular character
is played multiple hours every day. However, if a character is only
rarely played (as in most alts), then it can be most profitable
making transmutes.

My recommandation for most players is to level 1 to 60 with two
gathering professions. Once you reach 60, buy your epic mount. If
you still have enough cash to powerlevel tailoring to 350, then do it,
pick a specialization, and start transmuting every 4 days.

If, on the other hand, you have nearly limitless gold, then this guide
is not for you. Pick up engineering and enchanting, since these provide
valuable upgrades for your characters, and are widely accepted as only
for the wealthy in the game.

Important Concepts:
Anyone reading this guide should understand these points before they
choose to undertake this procedure:


* Crafting non-rare (white) items will always be a loss of money.
Since they cannot be disenchanted, there is no demand for these
items, so it is best to sell them to an NPC.
* Disenchanting items up to level 50 can be done by any alt who has
reached level 5. I would recommend that all players should have a
level 20+ alt who can disenchant. Once you get this alt to 20, find
a powerleveling guide for enchanting (look in the professions forum)
and get to 225. You can now disenchant any green items up to 63.
If you level this alt to 35, and get enchanting to 275, then you
can DE anything in the game except level 70 epics.
* The listing fee for selling dust, essences, and shards (produced from
disenchanting) on the AH is 0. Therefore, you can relist such items
indefinately, and the only price you will pay is the 5% tax on the
final winning bid. This does not apply to armor, so generally all
green armor should be disenchanted before selling on the AH.
* Creating bolts of a particular resource should be done as soon
as the required level is reached. For example, the "silk phase"
should be disrupted temporarily to create mageweave bolts, and then
the "silk phase" should be resumed. This is because the mageweave
bolts have to be created at some time, so you should do it while
it still generates skill-ups.
* You can usually make considerable money from bags. Of course, this
depends on your server, since some servers have players who have
completely cornered this market. This also depends on bank space,
since you won't be able to sell all the bags you make the first day.
This guide does not encorporate bags, but fell free to mix them in.




Goals of this document:

* To provide a procedure to reach level 350 or 375 only hours after
picking up tailoring. All items from the AH, or limited quantity
vendor items should be acquirable before picking up tailoring.
* Overall cost is minimized. This doesn't mean the cheapest
possible item is made, but the mats cost minus the value of the
final item should be minimized.

Preparation:
The following steps can be preformed before dropping your previous profession:

* Reach level 50 (requirement for master tailoring)
* Reach level 60 if you want to specialize. Transmuting is not
really profitable unless you specialize
* Acquire the following resources from the AH, or from friends:

o 116 Linen Cloth (5.8 stacks) (about 1.50 gold to buy from AH)
o 162 Wool Cloth (8.1 stacks) (about 9 gold to buy from AH)
o 508 Silk Cloth (25.4 stacks) (about 20 gold to buy from AH)
o 575 Mageweave Cloth (28.75 stacks) (about 75 gold to buy from AH)
o 852 Runecloth (42.60 stacks) (about 100 gold to buy from AH)
o 72 rugged leather (3.6 stacks) (about 16 gold to buy from the AH)
o 1110 Netherweave cloth (55.5 stacks) (about 275 gold to buy from AH) to get to 350
o +1686 Netherweave cloth (84.3 stacks) (about 425 gold to buy from AH) to get from 350-375
o 70 Arcane Dust (3.5 stacks) (about 140 gold to buy from the AH) to get to 350
o +134 Arcane Dust (6.7 stacks) (about 268 gold to buy from the AH) to get from 350-375

* Get Pattern: Dark Silk Shirt from vendor in Darkshire/Tarren Mill
(11s). Vendor carries only 1.

The vendor is found outside, by the fountain in Tarren Mill. In
Darkshire, the vendor is upstairs in the building across from the
inn.

* Get Pattern: Azure Silk Cloak from vendor in
Thalanaar/Hammerfall (11s). Vendor carries only 1.

In Hammerfall, the vendor is in the large rectangular building near
the entrance. It's the same building that the first aid artisan
quest is in. For Thalanaar, the vendor is standing in a lighted
gazebo, a little north of the rest of the camp.

* Optional: Get Pattern: White Bandit Mask as a drop or from the AH.
If you can find it on the AH for a couple gold, it's probably worth it.
You'll save 10 mageweave bolts by using it instead of black mageweave
leggings between 215 to 225.

* Get Pattern: Mooncloth from Winterspring (2g). Vendor
carries unlimited quantity.

Since the mooncloth pattern is available in unlimited quantity, it
can usually be found cheaply at the AH. This may be a good option
if you are 50, and can't get to winterspring alone.

* Get Pattern: Netherweave Robe and Pattern: Netherweave Tunic from
Eiin in lower shattrath. He ony carries one of these at a time.

* Get Pattern: Imbued Netherweave Robe (or Tunic) from Arrond in
the scryer city in Shadowmoon Valley. If you have chosen Aldor,
then have a friend get it, or find it on the AH.

* Optional: Get the arcanoweave patterns (especially boots) from
Mechanar and Arcatraz. These patterns are BOP, and can only be
picked up by tailors. Using these patterns can easily save you

Since this guide uses yellow items to level in a few places, there
is a small chance that one of the items you make may not give a
skillup. I've followed this procedure several times, and never had any
problems, but it doesn't hurt to buy a little extra cloth, just
in case. Once you get to 373, there is a chance that your items
may not give a skilup, and at this point, it is very costly

The prices of cloth varies greatly between servers. I've seen some
servers where the cost of a given cloth may be 3 times the cost on
a different server, so the estimates here may be way off for your server.

By these estimates, it should cost 560 gold to get from 1-350, or about
1450 gold to get 1-375. Using the arcanoweave patterns will greatly decrease
this cost.

Walkthrough
If the item is brown when you make it, you will always generate a
skillup. Yellow makes no promises. Sometimes, on an item that
was yellow, I had to make 3 items just to get one skillup. Green
rarely makes a skillup. Grey never produces a skillup. For most
items, you should only use it when it is brown. A few items have
a large yellow region, so you can make a few after it has turned
yellow without risk. Bolts are an exception. We will usually make
bolts until they turn grey, since they will be needed later anyway.


The 4 numbers separated by slashes indicate when this item turns
brown/yellow/green/gray.

Pick up Tailoring from a Journeyman Tailor. These are found in
all the major cities. Level 5 is required for this skill.

Pick up Journeyman Tailoring from a Expert Tailor. These are found
in all the major cities. Level 10 is required for this skill.

SILK CRAFTING PHASE (125-175)

Pick up Expert Tailoring from an Artisan Tailor to pass 150. These
trainers are found in Stormwind and Undercity. Level 20 is required
for this skill.

Unlike linen and wool, you can make bolts until they go gray,
without wasting any. In fact, for this stage, and for all others,
it is advisable to buy bolts instead of of cloth from the AH, if
you can get it cheaper (I never see bolts on my server's AH).

Some of the silk bolts made here will be used in this stage. The
rest will be made in the first part of phase 4.

MAGEWEAVE CRAFTING PHASE (125-175)

Pick up Artisan Tailoring from an Master Tailor to pass 225. Level
35 is required for this skill, and you must be level 200 before
you can pick it up.

Master Tailor Daryl Stack is found in the church, at Tarren Mill.

Master Tailor Timothy Worthington is found in Theramore. To find
him, walk into the city portion from the pier. Turn left when the
road forks. The first building on your left is his, and he's on
the second floor. There is a tailoring vendor downstairs in the
building, but he doesn't have blue dye, so bring what you need with
you, if you haven't finished Azure Silk cloaks!!!!

Just like silk, you can make bolts until they go gray, without
wasting any. Once again buy bolts instead of of cloth from the
AH, if you can get it cheaper. It will take 75 mageweave cloth to
get the full skillups in making bolts. So, if your mageweave is
stored in your mailbox, you may want to get out only 4 stacks to
level on bolts. Then, finish your silk crafting, and then make
the rest of your bolts.

Azure silk cloaks should be made after creating your mageweave
bolts. I believe you can continue to get regular skillups well
into the yellow region, but I'd like to see someone respond to this
post to confirm. If not, you can fall back on Crimson silk vests,
but they take more silk, and cannot be disenchanted.

The items in this stage should be disenchanted.

RUNECLOTH CRAFTING PHASE (250-300):

The chepest procedure is to just purify 50 mooncloth. This will take
you from 250 to 300, since the recipe stays brown the whole time. But, it
will take 200 days to complete this, so it is not the best way for most of us.

250-260: Make 142 Bolts of runecloth. You'll need these later.
You will probably get the full number of skillups after making only 15.
Ingredients: 852 runecloth

260-282: Make 22 Runecloth Belts.
Ingredients: 66 bolts of runecloth, 22 rune thread. When I did this, the 23rd did not produce a skillup. The belt goes yellow at 270, and green at 285. If you stop getting skillups, before reaching 282, then move to the next step.

282-283: Purify 1 mooncloth. (optional)
Ingredients: 2 felcloth

283-300: Make 18 Runecloth gloves. These turn yellow at 290, but usually generate skillups through level 300. It's likely that one will fail, that's why I say 18 instead of 17.
Ingredients: 72 bolts of runecloth, 72 Rugged Leather, 18 rune thread. (assuming you get by with 18.)
This recipe is now taught from the tailoring master trainer.

Disenchanting

Disenchanting every item from 1-250 netted me about 60 gold, after
selling the dust/shards/essences on the AH. I used to have the
breakdown here, but have taken it out until I can try again with
all 1-350 items from this guide.

Variations
If you get the white bandit mask pattern (drop), it can be used
from level 215 to 225. It will save you a lot of mageweave (10
bolts), and can be disenchanted, but it's a rather rare drop, and
it's possible you won't be able to find the recipe on the AH, or
the price of the pattern may be more than you want to pay.

Some players report grinding the whole distance making only green
items. Obviously, in the linen and wool stages, this will require
using far more raw materials then the guide that I have here, and may
require buying rarer ingredients (such as spider silk). I chose not
to make "soft-souled shoes" and the like, because it just wasn't worth
the effort to disenchant them for a few coppers.

Honestly, an unlimited amount of wealth could be made by creating these
low level greens, as long as you are able to continue to find buyers
on your soul dust. I tried this for a little while, but the time I spent
making the auctions for the dust and essences was just not worth the small
amount of money per item.

NETHERWEAVE CRAFTING PHASE (300-375)

Finding the grand master tailor
To continue past 300, you will need to find the grand master.
Horde players should speak to Dalinna (on the left side of the inn
in Thrallmar). Alliance players should seak out Hama someplace in
Honor Hold. The skill of master tailor requires level 50. If you
are not yet level 58, have a friend summon you, or by a portal.
Netherweave Bolt, Netherweave Bag, and Netherweave Belt patterns are
all taught by Hama and Dalinna.

The main procedure I am choosing to list here will be simple, since
it does not contain bags, transmutes, or arcanoweave recipes, and it
assumes that you have all the cloth needed up front. I have listed
some alternative through the addendums at the end.


* 300-325: SKILLUP 300 / 305 / 310 / 325

I'm not really sure how many of these are needed to reach 325. I think I
made about 60 bolts before they went grey. If you don't have enough cloth
to reach 325, but want to continue on, you can make netherweave bags or
netherweave belts to reach 325 (see addendum A).

* 325-340: SKILLUP 325 / 330 / 335 / 340
Imbued Bolt of Netherweave, qty: ~102

Once it took me 30 imbued bolts to get the last skillup. Another time
it took me 35 imbued bolts to get the last skillup. So, if you just want
to get to 340, then you don't have to make all of these now. I have listed
102 of these, assuming that it will take 17 items to get the last 15 levels.
Be aware that it may only take 15 (as it did for one of my characters), or
it may take about 25 if you are extremely unlucky.

At this point, you can jump to addendum B, and then make bags all the
way up to 350, since you can often sell bags for a profit on the AH, or you
can just go on:

At 350, you can start making transmutes. If you aren't in a hurry I would
recommend doing these for a few days for skillups. They provide some good
cash on the side. These turn yellow when you get them (at 350), green at
355, and grey at 360. Once you've done a few, jump back in with tunics again:

Tailoring Choices

Choosing one of the three specializations

As you probably know, you will want to choose between primal
mooncloth, shadowcloth, or Spellcloth sometime after reaching
350. You can do this by speaking to one of the specialists in the
crafting area of Shattrath. The quest to specialize is only available
once you have reached 350, and your character is level 60. The
choice can be undone, but it costs 150 gold to unlearn a specialization.


* Primal Mooncloth - These transmutes require a moonwell.
They can be found in Darnassus, Stormwind, Cenarion Post (Zangamarsh),
and many other places. This is needed for primal mooncloth bags, and
is also needed for the "Primal Mooncloth" set, targeted towards priests
and other healers. Transmuting this from an imbued bolt of netherweave
requires one primal water and one primal life. Completing this transmute
gives you a 1-hour buff.

* Shadowcloth - These transmutes require an Alter of Shadows,
which is found in the SE corner of Shadowmoon Valley. It's guarded
by level 70 air elementals, but is reachable with an epic mount without
dying at level 64 (if you know where you are going!) Ride south between
the two mountain ranges, and then turn right just before falling off
the continent.

This cloth is used for the 28-slot soul shard bag, and for the
"Frozen Shadowweave" set, which is targeted towards warlocks,
shadow priests, and ice mages. Transmuting this from an imbued
bolt of netherweave one primal shadow and one primal fire.
Completing this transmute gives a stamina buff that lasts one hour.

* Spellcloth - These transmutes require the user to be anywhere
in the Netherstorm region. Upon completing transmute, a level
70 NPC will be summoned to fight you, so it is recommended to be ready
for battle before starting the transmute. I usually complete the
transmute while dialoging with the area 52 flight master. As soon as
the transmute is done, I accept a travel path, thus avoiding the nasty
elemental. This cloth is used for the 28-slot enchanting bag, and for
the spellfire set, targetd towards arcane/fire mages and destruction
warlocks. Transmuting this from an imbued bolt of netherweave
one primal fire and one primal mana.



Any tailor of level 350 can do any of the three transmutes listed
above, although if you specialize in one of the three disciplines,
then you will produce double cloth of that type with each transmute
(2 instead of 1). If you need a type of cloth that you have not
specialized for, it will probably be better to just buy it off the
AH. Each transmute has its own 4 day timer.

I have personally decided to specialize in primal mooncloth on
both my priest, shadowcloth on my warlock, and spellcloth on my
mage and shaman (mostly for monetary reasons). I have been able
to sell spellcloths for 60g on the AH, and primal mooncloths and
shadowcloths for 40g.

Choosing a faction in Shattrath

Two of quadrants of Shattrath (the large neutral city in Outlands)
are controlled by factions. These factions are in opposition to each other.
Choosing one will make the the opposing quadrant of the city unavailable
to you, so it is important to make this decision wisely. This decision
does have a (small) impact on your tailoring:

* Aldor - this faction has Draenei NPCs, but is available to
horde and alliance. With this faction, you will have access to recipes
for Silver and Golden spellthread. They can be sewed into pants to
permanentlny increase healing (and stamina).

* Scryers - this faction has Blood Elf NPCs, but is available
to both horde and alliance. With this faction, you will have access
to recipes for Mystic and Runic Spellthread. They can be sewed into
pants to permanently increase spell damage (and stamina).


Tailoring is not the only reason to pick a particular path. Everyone

It is possible to undue this decision, but it will take a lot of time
to get back the reputation with the faction you shunned. There are
specialized RRQs designed for undoing such a decision, but the
other RRQs normally used for increasing faction are only possible
if you are already friendly.

Conclusion
Taking tailoring up to 340 is sufficient for 18 slot bags. 350 is sufficient
for transmutes. 375 is needed for the best crafted cloth sets in the game,
but very expensive to acheive!
